Gukesh was born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, into a Telugu-speaking family from the Godavari delta region of Andhra Pradesh. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon, and his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist. He started learning chess at the age of seven and attends Velammal Vidyalaya in Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai.
