Alexander Ovechkin has two elder brothers, Sergei and Mikhail. Despite their parents’ inability to accompany young Alex to hockey games, his older brother Sergei stepped in and made sure his younger brother got where he needed to go. Sergei died of a blood clot following a car accident when Alex was only ten years old. Despite the devastating loss, Alex played youth hockey the next day, as his parents insisted. He credits Sergei with introducing him to hockey and encouraging him to pursue it. When Alex scores, he often kisses his glove and points to the sky as a heartfelt tribute to his beloved brother.
